The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts closed for renovation on 26 Jun 2008 and will not re-open until the late 2010 season. While it is being renovated a 55 storey condominium called the L Tower was supposed to be constructed beside and to some extent over the top of the theatre, but as of August 2010 this has literally not left the ground.
Formerly known as the Hummingbird Centre and the OKeefe Centre, the historic sony Centre landmark has been hosting live shows since 1960 and is the premier live stage theatre in Toronto, presenting major shows from the around the world. It is the largest indoor theatre in Canada, having over 3100 seats, some of which are wheelchair accessible. Shows reflect the cultural diversity of the city and consist of top acts that are touring the globe. Many large-scale musical shows premier in Canada through this building. The theatre has modern seating and excellent acoustics, and a large lobby contains a refreshment area that includes bar service. Tickets are normally available if purchased in person at the box office (which is currently closed) or you can usually purchase tickets online or by phone using Ticketmaster (show schedule begins 01 October 2010).
