The historic south building of the St Lawrence Market contains over fifty vendors that provide downtown with the finest fresh foods available in the city. Savour the sights and sounds of a market that has been running for over one hundred years. Founded in 1803 as a local farmers market, it remains one of the top places to shop for fresh food in Toronto even a century later. Every kind of meat and poultry from rabbit to pheasant is available through several large meat outlets. Seafood flown in daily includes fish from around the world, giant snow crab, live lobster, and tilapia fillets. Breads and pies are baked on the premises, and baked goods include unique cookies and pastries. Fruits and vegetables are trucked in fresh from local farms, along with eggs and regional cheeses. Organic produce is available from many vendors. Gourmet teas and coffees, fresh-cut flowers, plants, kitchen utensils and dining accessories round out the extensive selections. Many unusual and unique foods are available throughout the market, including home made jams and sausage. If you find yourself hungry while shopping, there are eight different restaurants and snack bars to choose from. Entertainment is often available on Saturdays as musicians play a wide variety of instruments and styles. An art gallery with rotating exhibits occupies the top floor of the complex and provides an excellent view of the busy market floor.
